The first German immigrants arrived at the end of the 19th Century searching for a better life. The first colony was founded in 1811 and was named San Bernadino. In the 20th century another colony was founded near by Villarica. The new village was named Independencia. The immigrants received land from the paraguayan government and they started to reclaim the land. Very soon austrian and sudeten German came and founded themselves the colonies Carlos Pfannl and Sudetia. Till the 1970’s in this region the colonists planted grapes for wine. Till now you can still visit the old wine cellar from this golden time. Today there are not many colonists left who produce wine. Visit these places which are part of the German history.
